This play first came to my attention while reading Jill Nalder's Love From the Pink Palace and has been on my to read list ever since. Yes I READ plays, everyone should. This one, although I knew I wanted to read, filled me with some trepidation, not because of the subject matter but because it was a play written in verse.

Poetry and verse has never been my forte. Being dyslexic I can't really follow the meter and it all ends up a mess in my mind. Elegies, though, just clicked for me. The rhyme and the meter were perfect and it spoke to me in ways that a conventional play might not have.

Russell has put together an absolute triumph of a play, one that is in turns funny, tragic and full of humanity. It really deserves to be revived.

5 stars are not enough for this play.
