Giving this two stars because the hero was truly out of this world in this one and saved this one from being a full on disappointment. But everything else is such a hot mess, to me personally. I hate the influencer culture this heroine is so involved in, because it dates this book horribly, and although written 2-3 years ago, it's already 'old' for its internet slang and pop culture references. Hated the plot's structuring around the gym setting (I!!! hate gyms with my whole heart!!) and in fact the whole book was super triggering for me, but not in the kind that would allow me some kind of katarsis.

Sometimes, maybe, it's better to shut up on important, but deeply personal topics that one may know nothing about. Because sometimes, unfortunately, you end up with a poorly paced novel that says nothing.

Overall it was pretty cute but I'd just read one negative-social-media (negative comments) book and...it's realistic, but I don't know if I really want to read about it.

Mentions many times she’s half Chinese and plus size….once was plenty!
She also accused Scott of being an anti-vaxer because he was afraid of needles. 🙄
Young, immature girl who’s obsessed with social media and what people think about her.
Very annoying

Upon first reading the blurb of this novel, I knew that I wanted to devour its contents. It just sounded like one of those great romantic comedies from the late 90s/early 2000s, only with a modern twist. Fortunately, this is exactly what it was.

This debut novel contains great references to the pop culture of today. The characterization is clear and sufficiently rounded. Its scenes all seem appropriately placed and paced and chosen. Dialogue vs. narration is well balanced and varied from thoughts to spoken conversations to text messages and blog comments. This variety makes it interesting and read rather quickly. I must say, however, that the amount of "steam" that this books contains is a little too gratuitous to my liking. It could stand to lose one or two sex scenes, or at least their explicitness. That being said, it does explore some interesting topics beyond sex, love and romance: self-concept, beauty standards, social media, social constructs, mental health, family, friendship, bi-racial identity, grief, and so much more...!

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, lighthearted romantic comedy, who enjoys sarcastic wit, the enemies-to-lovers trope, and social media.
