I didn't really get into this until probably halfway through or so...it puzzled me as to whom I was supposed to like, whom I was supposed to trust. Then a plot twist made things a little clearer. It wasn't as gripping as a couple of the other Mary Stewart books that have kept me up of nights to find out what happens, but it did pick up some steam toward the ending.

I like the premises, but thought this was a bit boring

4 stars for the sheer nostalgia! I read this book years and years ago and enjoyed as much this time around. Written in Mary Stewart’s usual dry and uninvolved style, the sense of threat and menace were developed as the story progressed but were only fully realised in the last few pages, and kept the reader interested throughout.
The attitude to women, exhibited in the, often, passing comments of the male protagonists, was dated, which was to be expected, I guess, considering that the book was written in the early 60’s, and was an enlightening insight into those not so long-ago times.

Gothic romance similar to Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier. Has a good twist to the plot.

Enjoyable, page turning read about land and famiy and money. Reminded me a bit of Rebecca, which is never a bad thing.
Though I do feel like an idiot for not figuring out the twist earlier. . .

Enjoyable but infuriating.
