I spent the first half bored and the second half confused and anxious.

I appreciated that it passed the Bechtel test, but it overall had too much detail for me that I felt like distracted from themes of teamwork and trust. I would like to see it as a movie where the fluff is removed.

I can see how some of the real world implications bring down the rating for other readers, but purely from a story stand point it was very entertaining and an easy read.
The one thing that erked me is having highly important team members pregnant at the same time. They all would be recovering at the same time which wouldn’t make sense on such a tight crew

Started out very slow and seemed very YA at first; writing was overly expository. But about 60% thru, things picked up and started to get very fun. Worth picking up if the description interests you, but don’t worry if you put it back down again.

The first half of this book is pretty slow and is very dense when it comes to the worldbuilding. Kitasei tends to tell her readers the lore instead of showing it to us, which is fine in some regards, but a lot of the worldbuilding is literally spelled out in ink. Nevertheless, I did read the second half of the book in a single day because that was when it really picked up and I loved how treacherous it felt towards the end. Overall, a pretty strong debut novel and I look forward to seeing what else Kitasei writes in the future.
