What a terrific read! An adventure-fantasy with palace intrigue, a bit of romance, and thought-provoking passages of beautiful prose. Almond and Quartz are the child-names for two young Nezel people. They and their family are refugee servants in the land of Irzem, where their culture and spiritual ways are just barely tolerated. But with the impending death of the Irzemi ruler, the last shreds of safety for the Nezel may soon disappear. Almond and Quartz learn of a secret plot to prevent Finch, the rightful heir, from taking the throne, and even deeper secrets abide in the hearts of several characters.

If you loved The Tombs of Atuan, you'll recognize this book as a "kindred spirit" of that one.
