This is beautiful tale of forbidden love, with so much angst, mystery and intrigue.
We have so many questions in the first few chapters alone. I really enjoyed this book. I can’t say much without spoiling it. But by the end....I need to read book 2 but I’m also scared.

Going in, I had no idea that this would end up being related to angels. I made the assumption that it only followed the usual YA mysterious origin female character path, which it did, but it was surprisingly tweaked. I really like how Karou isn't whiny or self-loathing, she really didn't know anything about her past or ever bother anyone about it. Also, the wishbone was a nice through-line weaved in the past and present. Each of her chimera family members was different and expanded on as the story progressed. Brimestone starts out as a typical wise father/boss figure injected with intrigue, but later revealed more than I would've expected. Some questions were answered, others left hanging just enough. Also, the cover is awesome. I may have to read the next one.

I’ve sat on Daughter of Smoke & Bone for a couple of days just to process it. To put it simply: I fucking loved it. What an incredibly rich world full of beautiful & deeply flawed characters. The entire book was a surprise, full of creatures doing terrible things that you still find sympathy for. What a perfect, thrilling, immersing first installment to a series! All of this from the lens of YA, too! Laini Taylor’s world is fantastical & shocking while full of deeply grounding morals and ideas. I’ve already started the second book! 1000000/5 for the book. 1000000/5 for audiobook quality.
