This was fun! I'm really interested to see what happens. I feel like this could potentially be a new favourite. I love how diverse all the characters are. The art is super cute too! Definitely check this out if you like Lumberjanes!

Perfect first series

Short, but in a good way. This is just the graphic novel series I've been looking for. Fun, fantasy, silly, all the things.

I wanted to like this a whole lot more than I did. The concept is really awesome, but I felt like it was too much for the opening. It makes Jory as a character seem really fragile at the start and then when everything transforms, I feel like we were given too much too soon. I like the balance of characters though because I can see how the crew would mesh well.

oh gosh, this was so cute!
it's no surprise to anyone how much I love cute friends fighting monsters but these guys were just the best. this first issue gives a little insight on the characters and the story itself but it leaves you absolutely interested and wanting to know more! I love these soft and artistic yet strong and brilliant boys. and, the art!!! the colours!!!

more, please. and now.

What a great way to start a story!

This is, technically, issue #1 in an ongoing series, so it's just a sample of the overall volume, but that didn't lessen it's impact.

With gorgeous full colour illustrations and a truly varied cast of characters it's the perfect introduction to a new story. The diversity shown, covering weight issues, race, geek nerds, gay guys and a shy kid trying to find his place, there's pretty much someone in here that everyone will relate to. None of them are perfectly flawless, just like every other teenage kid out there in the world.

Not only does it have fun, excitement and a whole host of weirdness, but it's also got a really sweet message about finding your place – which can be tough in high school – and the dangers of getting a little too big for your boots, like the McQueens.

In this world, the Backstagers is the thing to be. It's where the weird, the wonderful, the strange and loner kids hang out together and become a little family of oddness. And it's exactly where I'd want to be.

Geeky, Steve universe-like- artwork story... Could have potential.
(and Only 7 issues left so there's always that.)

The artwork was a bit too childish but it did work for the cute story. I related to the main character being shy and awkward in a new school. I also enjoyed the magic the story provided. Not sure if I'll continue only because I have a lot of comics to catch up on & read.

Representation matters, glad the main character is a poc. I hope this series continues.

This short single issue of The Backstagers was a fun introduction to a silly cast of characters and original storyline. Jory is starting his first day at a new school and decides that he needs to join an extracurricular activity. After meeting the backstage drama crew, he's hooked. The characters are very slapstick and dramatic. There are also fantasy aspects that set the tone of the story as very silly and carefree, which truly did remind me of the Lumberjanes. It will be interesting to see where the story arc goes.

I received a copy of this ebook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

not... entirely sure what i just read but i didn't hate it so i guess it is okay??

i don't go to an all-boys school, but i do act onstage in high school productions and i can tell you that there is a very large divide between the actors and crew members, and it was that way in middle school as well. i am going to college to major in theatre & performance, and i know right now it is going to be the same way there. the relationship (or lack thereof) between these two groups was definitely portrayed accurately in the sense that neither appreciates the other and they live in their own little bubbles, but i don't think the fantasy element was necessary.

now, i am not a fantasy person (although i said i wasn't a graphic novel person and here we are... maybe i am secretly a liar), but if the fantasy element of the
Spoilerportals
was taken out, i think i would've enjoyed this a bit more and given it a full three-stars.

the art style is super bright and colorful and expressive, but maybe a little too bright, colorful and expressive for me at times. that being said, i think the way the art continues across spreads of pages and the positioning of the panels on each page was rather satisfying.

a super quick read, though i would recommend it more probably for middle-grade readers than young adult readers. i would've loved the plot when i was a drama club newbie entering seventh grade.
