This is an amusing and disturbing set of short stories. Some stories are very short, which I tend to like. Many have fantastical elements, and these were the ones that seemed to be the most successful. There are some stories in this collection which I will not forget any time soon as they were quite disturbing, whereas others really didn't do anything for me.

I might not be literary enough to enjoy this kind of thing.

I'd heard about Heti from person after person. Spotted this at the library and took it home. Her voice is a lot different from what I read but I really enjoyed the balance between the pared down storytelling and vivid imagery. Loved it.

'The Middle Stories' contain fables, farces, and tales which draw laughter and concern throughout. The concern is no so much a negative connotation, but rather a confrontation with possibilities in which the reader can witness the reactions of a character in a situation that might seem familiar, but is acted upon in ways which might seem askew from apparent normalcy. Heti has written a book to be enjoyed time and time again.

This was such a let-down after How Should a Person Be, which I loved. Maybe I‰ЫЄll reread it at a later time to see if I feel the same, but ugh. Some of the stories were bad. I probably would‰ЫЄve loved them when they first came out, though.

This quirky collection of modern fables is a fascinating look at humanity dissatisfaction with life.

Some were stronger than others. It's her first collection so that makes sense and made me feel excited and close to the author knowing her trajectory. There was a sort of random chaos to the stories and they ended quite abruptly, without a rounded story arc but it was intentional and thus artful.

Wonderful, quirky stories. The personalized covers are one of my favorite ever considerations from an author.

What a fun, unique short story collection! I enjoyed reading each of them, although all ended abruptly, as if the author wants us to use our imagination for what’s to come. With no rhyme or reason to the stories, it seems there should be an underlining meaning that I could not pick up on, but that somehow seemed intentional from the author.

These stories are all stories with an odd twist to them. Fairy tales gone wrong such as women that live alone in a shoe and mermaids held captive in glass jars. People who think they know what they want until they get it and find that they don't want it after all. People who wander aimlessly through life looking for a purpose. Each story offers a different surprise, a different way of thinking. These are not happy stories, but are they are stories that make you think.
This edition offers nine new stories that weren't in the original release of this book.
