I really enjoyed reading this book! Was quite a quick one, i think it took me just over an hour to read with a few interruptions.

It does touch on some topics such as poverty and child neglect which may be upsetting for some, but I do think it is an absolutely lovely tale of friendship.

My only complaint is that I read it so quickly, Aniya and Empress’ friendship was incredibly sweet and it would have been wonderful to experience more of it!

Empress and Aniya by Candice Carty-Williams is a surprisingly short and innocent piece of fiction I’ve read so far. Only under 150 pages, and it hits you straight the heart. This was a quick, enjoyable, and fun read rather than YA and felt more like a short story or an anthology entry.

The magical realism element came entirely out of the blue for me, which I didn’t mind - coming into this story blind ultimately made it better. This short book covers some important issues of class, poverty and standing up for what’s right, but it does so with a light touch and doesn’t feel preachy. It’s an enjoyable teen friendship tale that I felt was pitched at the right mid-teenage bracket.

What a charming little book!! This completely reminded me of a lot of the books that I read when I was younger and I can always fall head over heels for Candice Carty-Williams’ writing style.

Lovely characterisation with a true emphasis on feminine friendship- something that I don’t think gets quite enough credit. It was refreshing to read a YA teen-centres book that lacked the presence of romantic interest. All in all a wholesome little read.

My only slight issue was that the pacing was a little off and I wish that the *spoiler alert* body swap excitement had been introduced a little earlier.
