Cassie has left her life—and her husband—in New York City to return to her hometown of Mammoth Lake, California. After ten years, she is rejoining the Search and Rescue team at Yosemite. Cassie becomes friendly with her fellow SAR workers and some of the young adventurers who have made Yosemite their home for the summer. At Yosemite, Cassie meets Petal, a young woman who recently moved to the area with her much older girlfriend, and Jada, who is on a cross-country road trip with her boyfriend. As the three women cross paths, dark secrets are revealed and their pasts catch up with them.
From the very first page, I was completely hooked. This book was packed full of secrets and surprises I never saw coming. Having previously climbed a couple of Colorado 14-ers, I was obsessed with the setting at Yosemite and McKenzie's descriptions of the park. This story is told from two different timelines from Cassie's point of view: then, when she first arrives in Yosemite in May, and now. It also includes Petal's diary entries, Jada's Instagram posts, news articles, and YouTube transcripts. I loved this format and thought it was a unique way to really get into the heads of each of the three women. This was a slow burn until the end, when things really heated up and became fast-paced. The twist at the end was completely unexpected. I highly recommend this book!
