I’m giving it a 5 star as sort of an overall comment for the series. I really do like it, and I like how the themes of alienation and self destruction and seeps through the pages. I feel like this book is not for any hard core sci-fi fans and not for anyone who needs an explanation to everything. In this entire series it’s the unknown and mystery and how things just happens for no reason that attracts me. Plus in this book a substantial amount of answer is given. And also is he writing a 4th book…please ._. I’d love to read it!

Well written but answers almost none of the questions raised in the first place

This book brings everything in the trilogy together. It revisits elements of Annihilation and Authority and draws the plot into coherency.

Multiple points of view has never been a format I’ve enjoyed, but this book manages to make it work. The change in style from one protagonist to the next helps each person’s narrative to feel unique and identifiable. The story itself was so tense that it was hard to put the book down. And some of the directions that Vandermeer went took me by surprise.

The vivid imagery in the language and the violence and horror and creeping obsession left a mark. In spite of how well done this book was, I prefer Annihilation. I didn’t need to have things explained. The experience and the gut wrenching knowing of the unknown in the first book was almost more powerful. I cannot wait to see what Vandermeer does with the fourth book. This series is profoundly affecting. I can see myself rereading it and rereading it, and there are certain scenes that will stick with me for a very long time.

I want to rip these books apart with my teeth and eat them.

“She knew where it would all lead, what it always led to in human bings - a decision about what to do. What are we going to do? Where do we go from here? How do we move forward? What is our mission now? As if purpose could solve everything, could take the outlines of what was missing and by sheer will invoke it, make it appear, bring it back to life.”
