Why was I so excited to read this? I even went out of my way to get a copy. Oh, right, it's because the book has a pretty good rating and was tagged as queer scifi. Well, it wasn't really worth it?

Mostly I just felt like there was a lot of stuff missing - background, on the world, on the characters, on everything basically. There was no depth to this story, and for me every aspect of it fell flat - the political intrigue, the 'romance' (seriously, there was so little chemistry, I'm really unwillig to call it romance. Lena has two guys pining for her. I did not get the feeling that she cared about either of them in a romantic sense, which is fine, but I don't think that was the point of the story?). Over all, I just found Lena pretty vapid and annoying, every other thing she did or thought made me want to roll my eyes so hard … Also, the technobabble was kinda irritating, even though I really liked the ideas behind it (or what I think the ideas behind it were). And I could go on, and on, and on but I guess, the gist of it is: This just wasn't the book for me. I like a lot of the ideas but the execution just didn't click with me.

It’s a smart political sci-fi that travels at light-speed. The characters are relatable, inasmuch as a hard-living crew of a starship can be. Their realistic choices and values inform every inch of the text. The world-building is rich, and the politics of the universe are spooky bad and well written.
