This book has many themes all pointing to the greater lesson of understanding one another. An excellent choice for middle grade readers.

I want to emphasize that representation matters. It does. We love to read books where we see ourselves. We love to be part of the story, and see that we can do what the main characters are doing.

The great thing is kids love to read mysteries, because it gets them thinking about how they would solve the story. And when you have a set of Indiginous, Cree kids solving mysteries, even better. The Mighty Muskrats Mystery series is up to four books now, and each one is a gentle middle grade type mystery.

In this one, they are at a wilderness festival, and there are two sets of suspects that could have tried to rig the dog race. One would be the college students from the city that are upset that there are dog races, because they feel it hurts them.

The second set are some gamblers from the city, that look as though they want to rig the dog race.
The kids figure the best way to find what the protesting college students want is to talk to one of them. And they sort of do the same with one of the suspects, to see if he is guilty.

What I love about this series is that the way the kids solve these mysteries is through observing and thinking and talking. There is nothing here that anyone wouldn’t be able to do.

These are all written by an Indigenous Cree author as well.
