Almost made me cry, in a good way. The conceit of the story being told as the author is thinking about telling it is a little disconcerting, but I didn't mind it too much.

i was assigned this in class and i didn’t really want to read it because i don’t like basketball, but Yang’s amazing storytelling skills had me laughing and crying throughout the story. i can’t recommend enough!!

The final game of this book had me physically shaking in anticipation. If you told me three days ago that I'd be excited over a graphic novel interpretation of a high school basketball game, I would have given you a side eye.
The way Yang develops all characters and shows the intricacies of loyalty, friendship, and determination through basketball is well done.
Yang does it again, like he always does.

I'm not particularly keen on sports books. I'm also not particularly keen on basketball. I do, however, quite like Gene Luen Yang. Suffice it to say, I didn't expect this book to become my favorite of his and yet here we are. It's jam packed with plot, characters, and historical detritus and it's magnificent for it. It's a tome, but it's a beautiful one, even if I can't point to any single element as standout.

This graphic memoir is outstanding. (I've been told you don't even have to be a basketball fan to think so.)
My 12 year old son read it first and loved it, so I snatched it up as soon as he was finished.
I think it can be easy for adults to dismiss graphic novels as less substantive than other books (I've seen several comments to that effect), but there is some truly excellent literature in this category, this book included. I love seeing the options increase, as this genre can reach more kids and lead to more reading.
