A very homey tale in early 20th century America. There's a Hearstian quality here.

I'm a big fan of this book, and often re-read it. The character of Rose is especially well thought out, has detailed descriptions, and the reader has a solid feel for her personality. I can often picture what's happening in my head. This book has intrigue, magic, books, and adventure!

A somewhat sugary retelling of a fairy tale in her Elemental Masters style. This one passed by my radar as it was her first Elemental Masters tale and I was avoiding Mercedes Lackey at the time. Still fairly enjoyable overall though a junk food read.

Minor: Colonisation, Death, Sexism, Racism, Rape, Torture, Child abuse, Slavery, Classism, Sexual violence, Misogyny, Pedophilia, Racial slurs, Drug abuse, Fire/Fire injury, Sexual assault, and Trafficking
All of the things I tagged as minor trigger warnings are mentioned in the book but a lot of it is them talking about the state of the world and how these sorts of things occur in certain neighborhoods/countries/cultures. It is not a super plot-relevant focus, but they bring up concerns of the slave trade and everything that comes with that. They don't graphically describe anything, but I think it is pretty clear what they are talking about about. Please take care of yourself.indecisivesailorscout's review

I love a good Beauty and the Beast retelling where he doesn't turn back into a man and they still get a happily ever after. Who could learn to love a beast?! Obviously Rose and also me.
It was delightfully old fashioned, which wasn't unexpected since this book is older than I am. For a book that was over 400 pages, it went past fairly quickly, and I do wish there had been a little more to the ending than a quick epilogue to let us know everything worked out. It was doing so good at showing rather than telling up until that point. Despite that, I loved Rose & Jason's story, and delving into the world of Magick.
