A really dark, sad, and scary tale. At the same time, there was such tenderness underneath it all. The book is a bitter reminder of the way injustice, corruption, and greed fuel the things that leave black women, in this case a Haitian-American woman, to deal with the dredges of it. It puts American privilege in sharp context. It is an unbelievable real tale.

Truly unsettling - I couldn't finish. I respect what the author is attempting, but the subject matter was too unsettling for me. I found myself repeatedly thinking, why am I reading this? Finally, I stopped. Also, gratuitous sex scenes.

Wow. Could not put this down. One of the most gut-wrenching, brutal, beautiful books I have ever read.

Conflicted. Absorbing and disturbing, but not in the way the blurb promises.

Read for book club. Parts are graphically brutal, to the point that I thought seriously about not finishing it. But, in the end, I'm glad to have read this. The voice of the narrator will stick with me for a long time.

First off don’t read this book without checking trigger warnings. It is not for the light hearted. This book will make you uncomfortable and break you apart. It is heartbreaking but so incredible.

So, this was kinda an odd read.  While the writing was great, it was very triggering, and this is coming from someone that doesn't get triggered a whole lot.  It's probably why I tend to stay away from most dark reads.  Not to mention, most of the characters were horrible people and for the most part, unredeemable.  The only ones who were not were Mireille, her in laws and her sister.  Her husband was redeemable at times, and her father, well, I'm going to keep my opinion to myself about him.
