The character development in this book is immaculate. It is a slow burn, but worth every second imo. I loved Circe throughout the whole book, my heart went out to her.

I cannot praise the pace of this book enough. I never felt like the story dragged on and I have to force myself through it. Madeline Millers stories have a flow that I truly appreciate.

Madeline Miller writes beautifully, with such complex characters that I always am deeply invested in her stories. I will read anything she publishes!

“Humbling women seems to me a chief pastime of poets. As if there can be no story unless we crawl and weep.”

It's not the book, it's me. I wanted to love this book so much because it's about Circe and I have always wanted to read a greek mythology retelling about her. The writing was beautiful but the plot was just boring. The gods were just so irritating. I liked Circe and and I finished this book only for her.

The book had a very slow start and never fully held my attention. Circe's story in mythology is an intriguing one, but this retelling felt flat and even boring at times. It has Circe reflecting on her inner thoughts and feelings as she goes about her daily life gathering herbs and flowers, as well as during some of the major plot points of her story. The ending was pretty sappy but touching. Having said all that, the book has its merits and the author succeeded at focusing on Circe's maturing and evolution into a more sympathetic character. I just personally prefer more swashbuckling adventure when it comes to mythology.
