Does this count as dark academia? If so, it's the only dark academia one I actually like. If not and it's more of just a straight up fantasy, it's still super good. I need to listen to the second book. It's a great teen battle royale kind of premise with similarities to the hunger games last book of the opponents banding together to want to break the system so it stops feeding on the lives of children. Really like Alistair's character and Isobel's character. Not the biggest fan of Briony and generally like Gavin as well. This is told in multiple POVs so if that's not your thing, maybe skip. But I want to know how everything ends.

I was intrigued because this book seemed a lot like the Hunger Games but with magic, and that's what it was, it just felt..... incomplete. Only 4 of the 7 "champions" of the tournament have chapters from their pov's and it felt disgruntled because of that, we were able to gather backstory on those 4, but every other character fell flat in my opinion, it was still a fun read, and I will be reading the second book, but I was so saddened with some of the writing decisions featured in this book.

THE CHARACTERS!!!!!!!!!

I think Herman is an auto-buy for me at this point… Love her works.
The description “Hunger Games with magic” is apt, and I loved the Hunger Games. I love fantasy more!

This book was a rollercoaster. I went into this book knowing that the main characters didn’t have the best moral compasses but some of the things in this book were interesting. The plot twist were unexpected and I liked how the authors developed and explained the characters in a way were you knew they were villains but the reasons why were so compelling. These quite a bit of violence and gore in this book and it ends on a cliffhanger but I really liked it.

This would have been an easy 5star read if the first 30% matched the last 70%. It was a struggle to make it that far. The pacing was slow, there was a ton of info and backstory. Which I mean, yes, we needed, but it wasn’t that interesting to me.
Now when we got about 35% in and the villains all started interacting and got into the tournament, that’s when it got good. The heat turned up, petal to the metal and they did not slow down. If possible it was even more tense the last 10%. I need the sequel like now!!
I loved the enemies to lovers between two characters. I was buddy reading with a friend and thought it would have been even better if
Gavin and Alistair
got together and I gotta agree with her.
There was betrayal, sabotage, action, and murder. I’m not sure how much more you could want.
Recommend for any fantasy lover!
