I am enjoying reading the various biographies put out in picture book format which allows an introduction of sorts for all ages. Just Like Rube Goldberg is no exception. It was a wonderful way to get a glimpse into a man who did not give up on his dream to be a cartoonist but also I learned about his alter ego Professor Lucifer Gorgonzola Butts who was the one who shared Rube Goldberg’s complicated contraptions to complete simple tasks. The end cover includes actual drawings and at the back there is additional information about Rube Goldberg. Readers interested in building and making will enjoy the magical whimsical illustrations and probably will get ideas of their own to add to create their own Rube Goldberg contraption.

What a cool person to make a picture book about! Here's someone I definitely knew next to nothing about before reading this book, but we all have seen his "invention" cartoons and the various spoofs on them over the years. Goldberg trained as an engineer, but hated his job with the sewer division; he wanted to be a cartoonist, so he moved to San Francisco to that. He worked there during the 1908 earthquake! Then he went to New York City and had a successful cartooniing career there. His first "invention" cartoons were created in 1912 and he drew them until 1964. The book, illustrated in pen and ink and color, is drawn in a style similar to his work, and really shows his sense of humor and how he wanted to entertain everyone. There's a nice author's note ("So You Have More Questions About Rube Goldberg?"), and bibliography. I liked the endpapers, which have reproductions of 8 actual early Goldberg invention cartoons (example: "Simple Mosquito Exterminator" or "Only Known Method of Attracting a Waiter's Attention"). Hilarious!

If I read this to my students I would want to provide more examples of his work. The book is a standard story (history) of someone who perseveres with their creative genius.

Brilliant, often funny, biography about Rube Goldberg, one of the most creative mind of his time. Love his story, told in narrative form, and the illustrations that support the words are really top notch. Much gratitude to the author for a sneak peak! Will definitely add as a #classroombookaday when it releases in March!

This would be a great book for a class or storytime at the library exploring STEM; it balances fun and play and art and engineering. I do wish it showed more of Rube Goldberg’s art aside from the liners, or some of the actual Rube Goldberg machines people have built - but otherwise it’s fun, simple, with great art and an awesome story.

Picture book biography. I had heard of Rube Goldberg before but did not know much about him other than his complicated inventions. In this book I learned: he didn't actually invent things but made drawings of the inventions, he had a background in engineering because his father didn't support his art, and he also made other comics that were not about his inventions. Interesting read on a lesser-known historical figure.
