See, now THIS is how you do an art book! For each piece, on the left page are Jusko’s concept drawings while on the right are the completed paintings. None of this book designer nonsense of spreading art across two pages, where it gets warped and a quarter of it gets lost in the valley between pages. Just glorious, gorgeous, giant full-page art. Love it.
Jusko has brief commentary on each painting, just giving a hint of background, so it’s not an in-depth memoir or anything. The art is the feature here. And beautiful art it is, too. The color and poses are all terrific, without a single one being phoned in. There is a section at the back showing Jusko’s process, which looks really involved, and greatly enhanced my appreciation of the effort that goes into each piece.
Plus it’s Marvel superheroes, so what’s not to like? This is a cool collection.
