Milla is now the leader of the Icecarl invasion of the castle. They are coming to set things right, and make sure the shadows don't take over their world. Tal has figured out what he has to do but he is plagued by guilt of killing two people, and he still has to rescue his mother and brother. Can the two of them meet up, rescue their world, and overcome their differences that seem so much larger now that they have had to go their separate ways.

I was waiting for this series to up its game and it left it rather later and that's good because this book was stunning. With Milla massing her forces of Icecarl to attack the Castle and the Chosen Tal enters the Aenir to find the Empress and use the Violet Keystone to free Rerem and Lokar only for things to really not be as they seem.

Firstly fuck that cliffhanger. I would try to keep the language at a minimum but holy shit that was cruel. Garth Nix has done it before brilliantly done cliffhangers that make you want to pick up the next book so badly. Lady Friday and Superior Saturday come to mind of being particularly cruel but this one was up there. Tal is rendered unconscious by the water spider venom which is like a kick in the teeth as he has a vial in his sleeve. Like ouch man fucking Sushin is pure evil. The idea that Sharrakor is actually behind all this is actually a little creepy and I cannot wait to see exactly how this plays out.

Let's start with Milla's plot because I'll admit it was slightly weaker than Tal's but through no fault of anything other than Tal was in Aenir. It's much more a magical place whilst Milla is trudging through tunnels with Malen to get to the Freefolk. Who thankfully all survived Tal's explosion. Crow is badly injured and Ebbitt has been drained but overall they aren't too shabby. I was disappointed that Jarnil betrayed them. Really disappointed but thank god for the rest coming through when the Icecarl make their way to the Chamber thing. Then shit hits the fan because oh yes the Chosen return from Aenir and all hell breaks loose. Cue great fight scenes of Milla with the Talon of Danir and the Icecarl up against the Chosen and their Spiritshadows. It was epic and that with all the planning which I'm a sucker for was stunning.

Tal on the other hand was brilliant. The whole thing with the sneaking around the Chosen Enclave in this ridiculous, though awesome suit was hilarious. It's like the worlds worst heist movie when him and Adras, absolute comedy duo, struggle to make their way to the Empress's place. I mean they get swallowed by a massive creature and the harpoons they encounter I hope get an explanation because I need one right now. Of course meeting the Empress turns out to be a massive let down because she's an old drunk and the Light Vizier is her brother who is just as bad. And then it came. The one moment that immediately elevated the book. It's really a small detail that Tal gets put in Violet Shackles which he removes and his Sunstone changes to Violet. I thought it was just like a rank thing, then the Empress reveals she never had the Violet Keystone and my mind was blown. The Talon of Ramellan and it all fits into place, the skeleton had both Talon's and Tal has been using half the Violet Keystone the whole time. Like holy shit. Loved it so much. And of course this makes Tal the Emperor with a whole lot more to contend with.

Thankfully Lokar has gone to restore the Red Keystone so that's something. But after a brief but touching reunion with Graile is cut short but Sushin and this last book is shaping up to be one long battle. I am so pumped and this series is so gooooood.

Garth Nix is such a surprising author. I pride myself (sometimes a little too much) on my ability to predict where a plotline is heading or who will die and who will survive in a fictional world, but Nix just throws my radar off. He has no qualms about making the journey this series takes you on as fantastic as possible.

This novel out of the series was a change from the others, as it is the first where Tal and Milla operate completely separate from each other for the entire book. I enjoyed this difference, but it was something which took getting used to. Sometimes I forgot what was going on with the other until it directly affected whomever I was reading about. But even so, it leads to a point where Nix has you hanging off every nuance and blink of his characters’ eyes for insight as to what will happen next.

Into Battle: Or, To Be Continued...

The 5th book is the The Seventh Tower series is just a set-up novel that furthers the plot. Nothing more, nothing less.

Tal continues his journey in the Aenir with Adras while Milla continues her journey in the Castle with Odris. They are both gearing up for the big battle and continuing on the story. Just lots of plot, plot, plot, not a lot of thought, thought, thought. Everything moves too fast to stop in think what is actually going on.

The world is so confusing and convoluted. I have no idea how anything works, what anything looks like, or what the rules of this world are and I think that is why I am having trouble investing in this story and this journey. Maybe the final book will explain it all (doubt it!).

P.S. Sushin giving me Sushi feels.

P.S.S. Adras and Odris, best characters hands-down.
