You know that part in the Shadow and Bone trilogy when The Darkling says "you could make me a better man" and Alina replies "or you could make me a monster"? This book is that vibe if Alina actually turned into a monster. However, I think both Alina and Selene would turn into monsters in order to save the world, not rule it, and would take down their morally *dark* grey characters in the process.

The only reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because I don't understand why Memnon had to force Selene to get her memories back. He just as easily could have talked her into it using his dick, I mean charm. At first, I thought that was part of his revenge but getting her arrested seems like better vengeance. I'm also not sure why he thinks her getting her memories (AKA Roxilana's memories) back is a good idea for him. Roxilana cursed him for 2,000 years so she must have been really pissed at him. Does he really want Selene to be that pissed at him too? He literally had a get out of jail free card, used it, and then turned right around and asked to be put back in jail.

I also take issue with Selene not wanting her memories back. My issue probably stems from my own experience with memory loss but still. I get that she feels like she is the person she is today because of the challenges she faced from loosing memories but getting those memories back won't change that, in fact I think they'll build on that and make her stronger, wiser, and more self aware.

P.S. Memnon is a first rate DICK... I assume we'll find out in book two if he has a first rate dick to go along with it.

P.S.S. Thank you, Laura, for including edge play.

Fast paced and entertaining. I really enjoyed Laura Thalassa’s writing style and I loved the witchy school setting. I definitely want to read book 2 soon

This was an okay book. I didn't love it and I didn't hate it. There were parts of it that I enjoyed, like the classic witch lore aspect and the coven and the school for witches, as well as the panther familiar (easily my favorite character) and the variety of paranormal species such as sorcerers and werewolves.

However, I found myself HATING the MMC, Memnon. Selene is an okay FMC, and her best friend Sybil was the only other constant in this book - and the friendship between Selene and Sybil did not seem very well developed at all. The encounters between them were all very superficial. I disliked how even though Memnon was CONSTANTLY screwing Selene over, she still gave into him physically any time he came on to her. I love enemies to lovers, but I cannot see how Selene will ever be able to forgive him for all of his nonsense - this is the only time I hope that the fated mates trope can be broken.

I am team Selene + Kane.

The dynamics in this book felt all off. As I said above, I didn't hate it - I will continue book 2, as I was approved for the ARC, with hopes that the characters develop a whole lot more.
