Star Wars: Rogue One Graphic Novel Adaptation by Alessandro Ferrari

I'm not quite sure what the point is of these Alessandro Ferrari graphic novel adaptations of Star Wars. I've read the Original and Prequel Trilogies, and now Rogue One. They add nothing at all to the movies and are so quickly read that it would feel really strange to actually spend money on them. (Thank you, Public Library! Our tax dollars at work.)

Rogue One is one of my favorite Star Wars films, however, and I'm eager to read even a mediocre graphic novel adaptation. This book instantly loses points because the cover art makes Felicity Jones look weirdly ugly. But all of the character designs in the book itself are very clever and appealing. This art style seems to fit Rogue One better than it did the trilogies.

The storytelling is disappointing. The Scarif battle is related so quickly that it's nearly impossible to understand what's going on, even for a reader who has seen the movie a number of times. My preference would be for an adaptation that expands the movie, not that contracts it almost beyond recognition.

For a Rogue One fan with a library card, this is a decent way to spend about 20 minutes. But I wouldn't recommend it more widely than that.

Spring 2020 (March Live Read):

I'm not a big fan of the retracing steps through the adaptions, so I'm sort of doing a mini-sprint for them. It's amusing to be in this one given the whole Rogue One novel series part going on in my novel reading right now, too.

Who do they pick for these artists, and why. WHY. || Jyn does have some serious "I will kill eyes" going on. || This, also, feels like it's going way too fast. ||

This had the potential to be a great Graphic Novel, but instead of really nailing the story, they focused on recreating the best moments of the film. But while the story was really lacking, the art style was beautifully done.

As much as I loved the movie, I was pretty disappointed by this comic adaptation. Oh well, Disney/Marvel have been doing a fantastic job overall with the original stories.

This was a fine adaptation of the movie but added nothing to what I’ve already seen. The movie was better.
