This is a novella in Sanderson's "Cosmere" universe and takes place between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War (read this before RoW). It follows several characters from Bridge Four, but our main protagonist is Rysn a disabled sailor who is strong and won't let her disability hinder her.
Overall, I really enjoyed the writing. It was one of Sanderson's stronger works, in my opinion. The pacing and overall flow of the book was really well done and the plot was tightly written.
Of course I enjoyed the setting/world building. That has always been one of Sanderson's strong points and it was no different here. I loved getting to see the expansion of the world and get introduced to some new concepts and beings.
The plot was also pretty good, but there were parts where I felt like some things happened too quickly, particularly at the end, but it didn't detract from my enjoyment much.
Finally, the characters. It was lovely getting to see certain characters from Bridge Four get explored in more depth. I really found myself liking Lopen a lot. I've really hadn't felt much for his character before, but now I really love him. Rysn was an excellent character and I can definitely see her becoming a new favorite. I really connected to her struggles and her determination despite all life has thrown at her. It's just so nice to see a character like her in books and one who was well done (I think I remember reading that he had disabled beta readers).
All in all, a solid installment in the Cosmere and one of my favorites to date.
Moderate: Violence, Ableism, and Death
