At its heart this a basic legal thriller, with all the gruesome details and drama that you would expect. What makes it really pop is that Jones herself is an attorney and she lifts the curtain to show what that life is really like. Which she is not shy about -- when one member of our book club expressed interest in going to law school she was unceremoniously told not to by Jones, our book club leader (the real life inspiration for Jess Lafayette), and a third lawyer in our group. They tell it like it is, and that makes this book fun.

I'd expected maybe more pitfalls in the case to heighten suspense and more romance, but I really loved that the story was set in Arizona, and all the little local jokes made it fun.

This is so exciting because I actually KNOW this author! I must say, the synopsis on the back does not do this book justice so even if you're on the fence because of it READ IT!
This is what I call a true court/legal drama book. It follows a really insane case where a daughter of a prominent member of the LDS community has been sexually abused and mistreated for much of her life. The book follows Mac Wilson, the ADA put in charge of the case, and how she has to navigate political minefields as well as personal challenges outside of the courtroom.

Much of the story follows the trial, and you can tell that the author is a lawyer herself, because it is so chock-full of detail--sometimes to a dense degree. But this is the type of court drama I crave--because we're not seeing just the initial statements, maybe a witness or two, and then the verdict. We get to experience all of it, and see how much goes into a "trial of the century." It was awesome to read and learn as much as being entertained by the characters.

There is a secondary plot within the book, but honestly, I felt that it was a bit rushed, and I would have loved the book just as much without the extra goings ons.

With that being said, I am in LOVE with Mac Wilson and I really hope that this is a series because with her and her ex, Anna Lapin and her friend Jess I could easily just fall in love over and over again.

This was an excellent debut and I am so proud of Becca and her hard work!
