Wuh. Better than a four-star, I think, but I couldn’t quite go to 5. Really really well done memoir, all the good, bad, and in between of a woman’s experience in the middle aughts. Compelling and emotional and real. Also vaguely humourous in spots, creating an almost surprisingly unheavy, readable flow. Highly recommend!

Ducks was a heartbreaking, infuriating, and devastating look at the experience of a young woman in the male-dominated oils sands of northern Alberta. Katie as a character was not my favourite part of the book - I just had a hard time connecting to her - but her story and her experiences resonated with me. This book sheds a spotlight on the problems with corporate greed, environmental devastation and toxic masculinity in a way that will stay with me for a long time.
