This book earned itself a spot on the top shelf. What a great read! Woolf was a leader in the modernist movement, and it reflects in her writing. She goes deep into the minds of her characters, and with that, turns a somewhat bland story into a masterpiece about society, class, and love in the early 20th century.

If you are interested in reading this, I highly recommend reading a physical copy, as you will not have the same experience with an audiobook.

"Like a woman who had slipped off her print dress and white apron to array herself in blue and pearls, the day changed, put off stuff, took gauze, changed to evening, and with the same sigh of exhilaration that a woman breathes, tumbling petticoats to the floor, it too shed dust, heat, colour; the traffic thinned; motorcars, tinkling, darting, succeeded the lumber of vans, and here and there among the thick foliage of the squares an intense light hung."

"There (she had felt it only this morning) there was the terror; the overwhelming incapacity, one's parents giving it into one's hands, this life, to be lived to the end, to be walked with serenely; there was in the depths of her heart an awful fear."
