Nostalgic, slice of life, part history, with a sprinkle of philosophy a well.

It's not just about lighthouses- but you do learn a lot about them- we get samples of literary critiques, personal anecdotes, cool lighthouse tidbits, lifestyles of lighthouse keepers, and a very meta travelogue that the author records while reading a diary of an Explorer of lighthouses.

The perfect read for when you're feeling a little melancholy and/or you want to hyperfixate on something.

I loved this essay collection. It's perfect for a rainy seaside day.

A bit disorganized but charming, lots of fun facts about maritime navigation and pithy observations.

“lighthouses speak in that primordial language of flame, and their message is, first and foremost, that human beings are here.”

such a lovely book!! bite sized history lessons both on individual lighthouses and the history of them as a whole, as well as sections on lighthouses in literature and media (to the lighthouse and eternal sunshine of the spotless mind in particular), and reflections on how lighthouses portray humanity in different ways. i will say the ending did seem a bit lackluster, but i was still left wanting more!

On Lighthouses sucks you in with lighthouse facts, but really keeps you with the personality and excellent writing. I picked this up in a library sale assuming it would just be a dry, informative read, like nutritional information on the back of lighthouses.

how many lumens? what kind of lens do they use? how tall is it?

While there is that basic information at the start of every chapter, this book really dives into the feelings of lighthouses, and the concept of "collecting" them. Jazmina absolutely nails the emotional tone throughout. The solitude of lighthouses, the nostalgia they bring, the transition from necessary life saving building, to largely decorative and obsolete.

This book truly brings you to the lighthouses, and makes you feel the way Jazmina feels. I did go into this book having an interest in lighthouses, obviously. If you've picked this up or found this review, you have at least a base interest. But I could go into this book hating lighthouses and come out of it wanting to vote a lighthouse for president.

praise lighthouses. They are beautiful, strong, nostalgic, solitary, humanitarian, safe, far away, ancient, modern, architectural marvels. I cannot imagine not loving this book. 6 stars.
