This was a Penguin Little Black Classics book, compiling the poetry of Christina Rossetti. These were not the first Rossetti poems I have read, but my Rossetti experience was limited. Some of these poems were absolutely fantastic, with ‘Dream Land’, ‘A Pause of Thought’, ‘The Queen of Hearts’, ‘A Dirge’, ‘A Frog’s Fate’ and ‘Nursery Rhymes From Sing-Song’ really standing out to me. There were very few weak poems, and overall, I enjoyed this collection. I would have liked to see 'Sister Maude' make an appearance, though.

I liked the title poem “Goblin Market” a lot, but this is mostly because it stand outs compared to all the other poems in the collection which are either about death or love or both. I wished more of her poems had the same fairytale horror aspect that “Goblin Market” did. Also too much slander of Autumn, the best, most wonderful season, in my opinion.

Stunning! I’ve read a few of her poems but never the well known “Goblin Market” as well as the other ones in this collection. Christina Rosetti is one of my favourite poets! Her poetry is beautiful, heart wrenching, funny, and magical ❤️ ✨

It’s always forbidden fruit. From Persephone’s pomegranates seeds to the peach in “Labyrinth”. I honestly think the Book of Genesis would have ended very differently if the Tree of Knowledge had produced Brussels sprouts.

Anyway…

Review haiku:

Ripe and luscious sweet
Fruit hungry for your soul
A drug that devours.
