Fantastic collection of Howard Chaykin’s 1987 reimagining of the Blackhawk legend along with the the never-collected Action Comics Weekly serials by Mike Grell, Martin Pasko, and Rick Burchett. Chaykin’s post-American Flagg! work is stunning in it’s design and storytelling. I enjoyed how he dived into the main character’s war-time bravado and chauvinism but held him accountable for it at the same time. The later stories by Grell and Pasko were a great post-war continuation of the Blackhawk story. Grell doubling down on Blackhawk’s flaws and Pasko finding intrigue and purpose for the team of aviators. Burchett was a great choice for the multi-part serials, capturing a consistent look that evokes the spirit and adventures of the characters. As Pasko and Burchett’s last story winds down, I did feel that the story is rushed to a close, but I’m eager to read their follow-up monthly series. Sadly, there is no collection of that so I’ll have to scour the back-issue bins.
