Cute but a little too silly for me. And either more truthful or less truthful would be better. But a pretty good tall tale and one of the daughter's gets to be the hero. Though the dad ends up seeming kind of unbalanced and somewhat disinterested in his family's safety.

Genre: Historical Fiction

I think this story is a fun story about a family moving west. I really appreciated the map and page of facts that were included along with the story. The family's focus on the fruit trees can be amusing and it is a good connection to thinking about how the families provided for themselves once they arrived in the West. I learned about apples and Oregon after reading the back page and I loved that a simple and funny story can also lead to a lot of learning.

2.5 stars. As an adult reader, I found the text of this story a little difficult to take, but the kid friends I read it with really liked it.
