Giving this book two stars feels strange because I honestly thought it was a well-done book. Yet, for some reason, I just didn't click with it. I think this may be because it was so intricate with so many different plot lines going that I didn't end up fully investing in any of them. I also wasn't fond of the parts told from the killer's perspective, which I think is just maybe something I'm just not looking for when I read a police procedural.

It took a while for me to get invested in this story. The characters weren't appealing at first, and I found the setting confusing with aot to take in.
The insight into the workings and corruption of the Mumbai police and politicians was fascinating, along with the Bollywood angle.
Once the pace picked up in the last third I couldn't put it down. I'll definitely read the sequel.

“she had left years ago. that dead body was not her. he had to stop letting her wander into his mind.”
this is for the bollywood crime film fans.
arnav singh rajput -
he is an honest and hardworking police officer who is haunted by the memories of tara, a bar dancer at the blue bar with whom he was in a relationship with, as he is currently with nandini, a journalist.
when a headless body is found buried in a site meant for the taneja estate holdings near the aksa beach, rajput has a lot on his hands. and when one body becomes two more, and there are more cold cases with bodies of that same form, it is a mystery he wants to solve.
he is just as heroic as bollywood movies portray police officers, going against superior officers who are possibly corrupt, uncaring of businessman rahul taneja and his connections, and even an attempt on his life.
but what really grounds him and establishes a connection between him and the reader is the way he reminisces about his family, particularly his sister, and then tara. tara consumes a lot of his memories and the fact that she went missing is something that follows him in this case. every moment he is on the case, he wishes for tara to be safe, hoping her end is not what he had to see with this case.
i have very mixed feelings about rajput, but he is an interesting protagonist to say the least.
the plot -
the plot was intriguing, but i do think the execution could have been better, because the ending was flat even if realistic and the explanation of why the culprit did what they did was clear but not handled nicely enough.
the motif blue works incredibly in this book. blue is associated with calm and quiet, a sort of stability, but the colour blue is rooted in the chaos of mumbai and also the jarring violence of the murders. it is ironic and clever at the same time.
all the knots of the mystery unraveled and were tied by the end, but it still felt “loose” for lack of a better word, so that did dwindle my happiness of experiencing this book.
the writing -
very descriptive. while reading, it felt like i was in mumbai, tasting the vada pav, smelling the fresh air of madh island, experiencing the crowd at the borivali station, and witnessing the raavan dahan that happens every year.
at times, though, it did feel like the writing did skew away from the main point to keep up its descriptive nature of the settings and characters.
