A great new way to look at the whole natural/organic/local food type issues-- and for different issues. This book deals with how the rush to increase yield, in both crops and meat, have led to an agriculture that will pump out more bounty these foodstuffs in much shorter time-- but at the cost of flavor, and as we learn is intrinsically linked, nutrition. A very entertaining, very thorough exploration of the topic that I highly recommend to anyone even mildly interested in the trend of people shifting their diets to natural, 'whole' foods or sustainable agriculture in general. If nothing else, I'm reading ingredient lists at the grocery store with greater scrutiny than ever before.

I loved this book. There are a million articles, books, and blog posts telling you what not to eat and how bad things are for you, but this book finally tells you what to eat -- and that food isn't bad for you. Real food is good for you and doesn't taste like anything other than food. I really enjoyed learning about the extensive research that has been done on flavors and nutritional wisdom. Highly recommend!

I mean, it had good information about how food has devolved, but the tone was so judgy and fatphobic from the get-go that I almost quit before I started.

The lack of in-text references really upset me as well. I started googling facts as I read, even though apparently there is a bibliography at the end (I read this as an e-book so it might be different in print).

In the end, 3 stars seems like a good compromise, maybe 2.5.
