The topic of this book is fascinating - I had no idea that so many women disguised themselves and fought in the (American) Civil War.
It's written in a direct way, almost as if Ash/Constance is telling the story round a campfire, but despite this we never really learn her motivations - we are held away from knowing her, much as her comrades are.
I really wanted to like this more, but my attention drifted halfway through and I speed-read to the end just to find out what happened.

Neverhome by Laird Hunt is a novel about a woman who goes off to fight in the Civil War while her husband remains behind and maintains their homestead. While the descriptive scene setting is quite remarkable, the heavy pall over the whole story is burdensome. Rather than the feeling of 'the grass is always greener...', this novel seems to aggressively expound the idea that no matter what your troubles, someone, somewhere, will always have a worse story to tell. I also find it remarkable that while most characters were able to share their troubles with equanimity, the woman of color is the character chosen to share her tale with the main character with violence. I was disturbed by that difference as there seemed no reason for that type of reaction.

I prefer tales with a happy ending, and if you are like me, this novel is not for you.

don't like but don't hate this story. it got me thinking about women during the civil war and the ending was not what I was expecting.
