While I appreciate the authors efforts to write a diverse medieval romance I really struggled with this book after having enjoyed so many others in the series.  Rowena is so unlikeable.  I hate FMCs who embody "not like other girls" as their entire personality and that seemed to be a lot of what Rowena had going for her.  The mystery and intrigue around the larger assassin plot was interesting but didn't really pick up until later in the book, and while the author's note takes a very "both sides" stance around conflict in the middle ages, the actual writing in the book seemed very one sided.  There were also so many mentions of horrific past abuse, so while not explicitly happening on page during the course of this story, I would check content warnings.

I hope this note finds you well and that you will smile when you think of me and not be saddened as I am saddened. I would never wish to be the source of your unhappiness. Instead, I hope you have all you desire and that someday, should things be different, you might again welcome me into your arms.
Ever yours, Stryder.

"I'm scandalizing you so you will have no choice save to marry me in the morning."

ben sevdim. kral-kraliçe ve kızın amcasının bu ikisine plan yaparak çöpçatanlık yapmaya çalışması, okuma yazma bilmeyen yiğidimin yaptığı düştüğü durumlar, turnuva saçmalığı, bu birlikteliğe yiğidimin savaşçılarının şiddetli karşı çıkışına kızın hizmetçilerinin 'bağzı' sebeplerden (lol) tam destek vermesi asdfasdfasd

tabii yine entrikanın bi tarafına koymuşuz o başka.
en naughty kitaplarda bile göremediğim pozisyonun bu kitapta mevcut olması grupta biraz infial yarattı hepimiz hâlâ atlatamadık hallelujah!

"...in shocking ways."

Far from being one of my favourite Brotherhood of the Sword books. This one was just ok. I was bored a lot while reading it and the romance between H/h didn't convince me. I would have given this 3 stars if Rowena didn't get on my nerves so much though. Also, I found all "the twists" unbelievable and the ending didn't work for me. It didn't stand up to the "why?" and there are also all the unanswered questions we're left with (I know it will probably all be explained in the last 2 books of the series but it's still annoying to finish the book with so many questions. It felt like the author just grew bored with the plot and decided to finish the story in another book. I don't like that.).

Rowena and Stryder. I absolutely loved these characters! The story was magnificent, with just enough mystery and espionage to make it addictive, and enough drama to keep a great pace. Simplistically put, a love story between two people who needed enough of each other to make them whole and understand their world.

Rowena, the troubadour female who hates war and knights and wants only peace and love, both in the world and in marriage. Stryder, who is a knight through and through. Two people who couldn't be any more opposite and yet they complete each other wonderfully, and are such an enjoying romance to read.

The sideline characters and stories were wonderful. Kit, the long lost brother to Stryder who really is the Saracen assassin targeted with killing his own brother- seemingly a bad guy, but in reality completely not. Damien, the mysterious royal entity thrown in the mix that creates a ton of suspicion among Hexan, the town. Swan, Christopher, Will, Zenobia, Nassir the brotherhood members. All a grand mix of characters that made the story as good as could be expected! Awesome!

Note- Sadly this review isn't to its full fledged potential since the reading took longer than expected with Christmas and some serious sickness.
