i really want to love a book about lil kim. it's hard not to. but greg thomas's whole anti-foucauldian kick gets exhausting when he doesn't seem to have a good alternative motive to talk about the same ideas connecting sex to power. thomas is a huge fan of lil kim which seems to be a block to looking at her critically or in perspective. would it be more engaging to consider her precursors, which he gives only brief nods to, such as H.oez w.ith A.ttitudes or B.ytches w.ith P.roblems? I like the stuff connecting lil kim's cultural production to orishas, matrilineal principles and other african things. he does a lot of research, but then why does it still feel rushed? the writing is tedious and uneven, and all the alleged insights into lil kim one could glean from... just listening to her.
