Well, I finished the book and I can't say that I was really thrilled with it. It was just a little too dark for my taste I think. It also could have been my mood. I'm not ruling out reading more in the series, but I definitely won't be listening to them because I simply could not stand the person who read this one.

2.5 stars. This book felt very disjointed, perhaps like it was written in separate parts and put together. I never felt like Maverick's world was fully put together. Where had the vampires and werewolves come from? Were they always there? It seemed that vampires could be born and made but it took until half way through the book before I realized they were immortal more or less. Are they just in crimson city or everywhere?

The story was actually pretty good and it is what kept me reading. I liked the tension between the three races, the mysteries that kept unfolding. However, the story never really seemed concluded. Which is okay since it is supposed to be a series but the conclusion it did have didn't feel like it matched with events in the book.

The characters felt lacking. I have read some reviews where they couldn't like the characters, I didn't have that problem, I just didn't feel like I really knew them. Maybe that was intentional, but you didn't get that sense either. It just felt cobbled together.

I'm surprised by all of the negative and not-so-great reviews of this book. I'm also happy that I didn't notice or therefore read them before I listened to Crimson City! I loved this audiobook. I was surprised that I'd never heard of this series and then realized that it's eight years old already. That could be the reasoning. I found the audio version to be entertaining and actually quite quick.

I really enjoyed the grittiness of this novel. Another reader reviewed it as seemingly coming from a comic. I felt the same way - it very much felt like reading a novelized version of a comic book.

I liked the characters of Crimson City. Fleur was interesting - I liked that she kind-of did her own thing, yet constantly wondered about being judged for her thoughts and actions because of who she was. I found her to be quite realistic. I loved Dain - he had such a crazy story!

Quick read. The story wasn't too bad. A bit predictable. Kinda like one of those shows where you are all "ooo, ooo, I know who did it!" and "oooooo... I bet they TOTALLY make out!" But I liked the characters and would definately read a sequel.

I am thinking Charlize Theron as Fleur and Colin Farell as Dain... There was quite a lot of action and not too much romance. The hero was good-looking, but grumpy and without a past, the heroine was a bit silly, but smartened up nicely. Well described and thought-out futuristic city setting. The revelation at the end was surprising, but led to the expected ending. A good, light read for low brain power.

Crimson City (formerly known as LA) is not a very nice place to live. Especially since the humans, werewolves, and vampires are all about to get manipulated into a huge race war.
