Akwaeke Emezi is a brilliant writer imo. I might not have been completely on-board with what happens in this (and I don’t deliberately seek out romance-themed books) but I still love and appreciate how intriguing their storytelling and world-building is. Very much a page-turner for me.
I couldn’t quite accept how Feyi treated Nasir on the island (we all know he was in love with her) bc she was leading him on and not acknowledging that imo. But I also know there is likely some internalised misogyny to look into with that (for me), though I’m not defending Nasir. I fully understand the connection she felt with Alim but I have to admit that when she mentioned loving Joy somewhere around the middle of the book, I was hoping at this point that that would be where it would go/end.
