I LOVE SERWA BOATENG. This series is so, SO good and this one was even better than the first! And I loved all of not only the pop culture references, BUT the nods to Percy Jackson. So fun! I really enjoyed this and am SO excited to see where this goes from here! I mean, her friends can’t bail now!

I really wish I could give this more than five stars. This series is so extraordinary and book II makes MORE than good on the promises of book I. Such a rich world of magic, adventure, and deeply nuanced socio-political hierarchies. Brown doesn't write racism and oppression in an over-simplified way for a 12-year-old to understand; she writes them in the way a 12-year-old experiences them and gives them the language and tools and validation to identify the deep wrongness of them.

Additionally, Serwa is just SUCH a great character. SO funny, stubborn, thoughtful, complicated, and at the heart of it all, so deeply good and loveable.

I will read anything Roseanne A. Brown writes from here into eternity. Can't recommend this one highly enough.
