I had a great time with this. It was a "blind date with a bookseller" book, so I hadn't read the first the series. (I def have to read that one to catch up.) I wasn't sure about it when I initially opened the book, but I realized that I wasn't opening my mind enough for the voice. Admittedly, many of the books I've read about cultures so unfamiliar to me are nonfiction, and I think I came into the book with these sneaky expectations of formality of those very serious books. And it was a good moment of reflection that I need to read more fictional joy about subjects that I'm not exposed to as often. I went on to just fall in love with Serwa and her little attitude and her push to find her true self. The pronunciation of Twi words in my head is total trash lol but I look forward to improving that with more of Ms. Brown's books. Funtunfunefu-Denkyemfunefu - I will keep trying!

I wondered how Brown would deal with the revelation that came at the end of the first book. I could not have imagined what she managed to come up with which proved quite a pleasant surprise. In this book, Brown continues to expand the world and also muddy the waters as to which side is "right." Serwa, as a character, has so much depth, way more than I would expect from this sort of book. I really enjoyed the direction that Brown took this story.

The Disney references got tedious and pulled me out of the action. Overall a fun romp, and I will definitely check out the first book ok and the next when it comes out.
