In this nearly wordless picture book, Greg Ruth examines the anticipation and emotions a child feels in the moments preceding and during reuniting with a parent who has been away at war.

The picture of the boy's face when he finally finds his parent is perfect. The expression of ecstatic joy is fantastic. Brings tears to my eyes.

Coming Home is an illustration book with less than 20 words in the entire story.
Greg Ruth beautifully captures the emotions that one goes through during a military deployment homecoming, something my children and I are familiar with.

I love the poignant author's note at the end of the book.

Mostly wordless with emotional illustrations. A young boy waits for the plane to arrive and searches through the crowd to find a soldier returning home. Scenes of other reunions around him elicit emotion and understanding of the various circumstances surrounding those left behind.

With only one or two words per page, the pictures really tell the story of a young boy reuniting with his mom after she's been at war. I think Ruth gets all the emotions just right, and the compositions are excellent. We often think of soldiers as being men, so I was glad that Ruth highlighted a woman in the armed forces. Well done!

I have shown this book to many educators and each one teared up. What a delicately simple book with beautiful illustrations. I read it right before Memorial Day and the impact was profound. This book can and should be read with any age group. The illustrations can be analyzed and discussed in depth. Amazingly beautiful.

This nearly wordless picture book taps into something that never fails to tear me up: soldiers coming home from war. The anticipation of seeing a loved one after a long separation is conveyed breathlessly through the hope and excitement of a young boy. I love the twist of who he's looking for. A well-done moment.

I've never cried over a children's book before and certainly not over one with under 20 words. Until now. My gosh. So, so sweet.

Beautiful almost-wordless picture book perfect as a Veterans Day read aloud.
