To be completely honest, I wasn’t going to read this book. I was pretty disappointed from reading A Thousand Nights that I really wouldn’t feel like I had missed anything out if I sit this one out. But Goodreads says that this was not necessarily the continuation from the first book, I mean it technically is but the event in this book happens for thousand of years after the first book, so I figured maybe it would have been different?
You know what? I can totally enjoy this one better than the first book. It’s either because I didn’t set my hopes too high or I just enjoy this story more. Sure, it was pretty annoying and boring reading Yasha narrates the story but there’s something interesting about this book compared to the first one. It might have something to do with the characters. This time around, we have a total of five characters, and although Yasha took the charge in narrating, at least we get to see different characters.
I’m still not entirely hooked on the slow progress of the story and the incredibly short epic battle that seems to be promised from the beginning of the story, but at the very least I did enjoy reading this than the first one. So, I assume that’s a good thing?

Thé writing was alright, this one didin’t really grab me. The problem with fairy tale retellings is that one knows partially what’s going to happen in the end, and that takes some of the fun out. I also didn’t enjoy the asides from the demon, I kinda skimmed some to get to the end as I wasn’t super keen on this one. The previous book in this series was much better

3.5/5. Johnston once again has an exquisite way with words, and I really enjoyed reading about Yashaa, Saoud, Arwa, Tariq, and Zahrah. She created an amazing world with the creatures from the previous book. Unfortunately, the conclusion didn't work so well for me and felt like a bit of a let down in my opinion.

Not as good as the first one, which was incredible, but still very good. Be warned though, happily ever after endings for everyone are not this author's style.

Spindle is trademark E.K. Johnston. That is to say it is beautiful, evocative writing with characters you will love and a plot that will tear your heart to shreds. I think I may have chosen the wrong day to read this as I was incredibly sad already. I think my love for it may have known no bounds if I had been in a different mood. As it was, I ended up wanting a little something different. However, this is exactly how the story Johnston was telling needed to unfold and as always she does a brilliant job of convincing the reader that this is how it needs to be.

Oooohh I was always going to be disappointed by this, wasn’t I? A Thousand Nights is so so lovely, the characters just pop off the page and walk in my living room. But they hardly caught my attention in Spindle.
Honestly had a really hard time getting into this, and then staying focused on it. It required breaks, not for subject material, but just for refresh on the endless journey.
The best part was their interlude in the mountains, the gnome’s garden.
And Yashaa had more chemistry with the other boy than he ever did with Zahrah.
And magic requires balance, but then 30 years???? She was only cursed for 11 years. Epilogues ruin books I tell ya.

I love the idea of drastically retelling classic fairy tales. Spindle did not disappoint...the end made me sad though and that is why I couldn't give it 5 stars.
