Book 65 of 2024: Sunny Side Up - Jennifer L. Holm & Matthew Holm

Sunny has been sent to spend a couple of weeks with her grandad in Florida, she was expecting DisneyWorld but ended up in a retirement home surrounded by elderly people!

Review:
⭐️ 4/5

I enjoyed this book more than I had anticipated and I’m glad it touched on important themes of substance abuse and the impact that has on the family. I love seeing difficult topics being handled in books aimed at a younger audience as it encourages conversations about things that can still impact children.

It's 1976, and Sunny is going to Florida to visit her grandfather for the summer. Throughout the story, Sunny reveals that her older brother has a drug/alcohol problem; and she has been sent to Florida so she won't see her brother go through rehabilitation.

I was looking for another graphic novel to read and I saw that a couple people have read this and enjoyed it so I knew I had to check it out!

The cover kind of reminded me of the graphic novels by Raina Telgemeier but they were different. Not only was this set during the 70's but it also dealt with drug/alcohol abuse in the family. I think it did a great way of showing the effects of what it can do to a family in an age appropriate way.

I was surprised that there wasn't a lot of dialogue in the story as well (not a bad thing but I think it would appeal to those that want to read graphic novels but aren't strong readers).

1970's nostalgia abounds in this children's graphic novel gently dealing with the effects of alcoholism/addiction in families.
