What a raw, beautiful memoir. It's a powerful exploration of gender, race, and sexuality.

"We often talk about miracles and how they happen. How there is a way made out of no way. But we don’t really talk about the opposite occurring, the damage that we are left with. The memories that we must hold on to of a person now gone. The things we wish we could have said."

I don't even know how to rate this. First of all, this is not my story in any way, shape or form. I read it to learn, and to understand a marginalization that is far different from mine, and to become more educated. And I will tell you that this isn't an easy book. There were graphic scenes that I had to skip for the sake of my own mental health, and I'd advise teens or anyone else reading to look at the trigger warnings and listen to what you feel comfortable reading before you pick this up, because it is upsetting and sad at times. But it's also such a joyful and inspiring piece of literature. It inspires me and gives me hope that I can someday write a memoir, too, about my disability and how ableism is still very much a problem in society. But that's another chat for another day! I think my favorite part about this book was the stories of this author's childhood and family. The joy and love that was imbued into these stories were beautiful. I felt like I was going on a journey with this book, and the only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because some parts were triggering for me, and that didn't diminish my enjoyment of the book, there were still so many things I loved about it! I'm so glad that I picked it up because I was able to learn so many new things and see the world from a different perspective from my own, and to understand just how hard it can be to live with this kind of racism and toxic masculinity and homophobia around you. This was a beautiful book with such a raw and emotional style, and I am deeply grateful that I could read it.
