A very comfortable read, most of the short-stories are or very endearing or very moving but all are heartfelt. I liked the writing style of those stories where some were divided into sections or others being told from a 3rd person perspective it changed the pace of the stories just enough to make it more enjoyable.
Also, the way those stories trace back the life of Nana from around 9-10 until she is 19 creates a memory re-telling about growing up, they feel like big chunks of life that are more filled with emotions than strict story-telling.
It made me feel a lot for the main character while portraying the dynamics between and lifestyle of 2nd generation Caribbean children.
A lovely read and I would definitely recommend it, it is short filled with heartwarming stories and leaving you satisfied in an effective and touching fashion.

I love this kind of story - it follows Kara from elementary school as she grows up in Canada, the daughter of Jamaican immigrants. She navigates being a Black Jamaican girl and then young woman and all the pressures, expectations, and challenges that comes with both inside her home and outside.
Exploring themes of identity, family, culture - Zalinka's writing is fresh & insightful. Highly recommend!!!!
