Finished on July 25th, 2022
I started Aristotle & Dante Dive into the Waters of the World in April 21st, 2022. I got in a little bit of a reading funk halfway throughout the book, which I think was partly caused by the book, because I just couldn’t seem to get into it. I decided to pick the book back up a few days ago and as I got to the second part of the book, I found that I could get into it a little more. The events that happened during this part were very emotional and Aristotle’s emotions were very well written.
I have loved reading Aristotle’s growth during the first and second book, being able to see him grow and turn into the person he is at the end of the sequel has been a beautiful and inspiring ride. Though I feel other characters weren’t as dynamic and I sometimes found it difficult to relate to them or attach myself to them because they didn’t feel as dimensional as Aristotle. I sometimes confused some of the characters with each other because of this.
I am glad that I pushed through and finished the book, but the first one remains my favourite still. I still absolutely love Aristotle & Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe and these two characters will always have a special place in my heart.

'kay so this book disappointed me. i get a few years had passed since the first book but the writing feels different. all the characters are overly sentimental, constantly near the brink of tears to make their conversations seem deep and meaningful. the teen characters speak more like dante, with pseudo intelectual and philosophical dialogue that’s hard to get through. points from the previous book are often regurgitated as if the author hadn’t nothing new to add yet the book’s 500 pages long.

i appreciated the context around the aids pandemic as someone who didn’t live through it. however there were some hamfisted attempts to address other social issues such as using a trans woman’s deadname and overall it felt moralistic and out of place. however i did love ari’s friendship group when they were being actual teenagers and that was the saving grace.

I loved this book. It is such a sweet and powerful book that tells a story of love. It is love in its most genuine form, not only romantic love, but familial love, love between friends, and love of life. It is a story of loss and pain and growth and joy. The words from this book will live inside us, just as they live inside Ari. Definitely one of my favorite reads this year.

3/14/2022:"Maybe we're both admirable, but I think that I was born with an idiot heart."

4.5 stars... Wow, this book. There was a lot of conflict floating around but it answered so many of my problems with the first book - especially Ari's brother and his victim. I'm so happy
Spoilerthat Ari finally got to stop romanticizing him and got to smell the roses and see that hey, he doesn't actually need that asshole. And him and going to name the grave, to give her a beautiful name... That was so. Touching.

This book was a lot more poetic than the first one and it felt a lot more touchy but in my opinion, it works because I was already so invested in these idiot characters... Dante is a BPD icon, too. I love them so much and that ending gives me so much happiness.

Spoiler"You know, I whispered, "I was going to ask you to marry me. But they won't let us do that. So i thought maybe it was best to just skip the wedding and get straight to the honeymoon."

"Have you decided where you'd take me?"

"Yes," I said. "I thought I'd take you to Paris. We'll spend our time writing our names on the map of city of love."

Like I said, conflict floating around, some of it felt brushed off too easily and some of it felt brought unto too quickly, but I'm a sap and I enjoyed it. The quick chapter changes made me sort of ignore how quickly conflict came and went, so it was overall a very enjoyable read. Basically, you're going to like this if you enjoyed the first book.

These two and this entire story will be living in my head rent free for at least a few decades.

“You matter more to the universe than you will ever know.”

10/7/2021: Oh my god yes yes THERE'S A SEQUEL AND THE TITLE IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND THE COVER IS SO BEAUTIFUL AND I AM READY TO SOB!!!
