A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows:
I LOVED the story of Roger's parents in this! It's the first time I've ever cried after reading a short story. It was perfection.

"Love Hurts 1D by Jim Butcher - 3 Stars
This is a very tame story on wizard Harry Dresden. Sadly I have not read any of Jim Butcher novels. I do believe that if I had read the series this story would be much better for me.

1CThe Marrying Maid 1D by Jo Beverley - 4,5 Stars
I admit it this was an after midnight snack for my mind and i was completely enthralled with this little story. I have never read this author before and it has been a pleasant suprise.

The short story collection heavily focused on romantic stories. All of them were heteronormative and swung between hopeful and tragic.

I wish there had been more diversity in main characters. There were a couple that took a turn I didn't expect and there were others that I couldn't finish because they were just so blahhhh.

I learned from this that I am not a fan of historical romances, there were three.

Songs of Love and Death is a collection of short stories about star-crossed lovers. Like with any anthology, there are some stand-out stories and some that I could have skipped. It's hard to review an anthology as a whole because the quality of the stories vary so much, but some of my favorite stories were:

Blue Boots by Robin Hobb
The Marrying Maid by Jo Beverly
The Thing About Cassandra by Neil Gaiman
Hurt Me by M.L.N. Hanover

It's interesting to see the different authors' interpretations on the theme. I was pleasantly surprised by Neil Gaiman's short story. I liked it and I usually don't like his writing (I know, I know).

I really enjoyed this anthology and am going to post some of the specifics about a few of the stories, but not all of them, that would make for an incredibly long review. I enjoyed the theme of this anthology (being star-crossed lovers) and I enjoyed meeting new characters and learning things about some of my favorite characters I did not know. I hope you enjoy it as well....

Love Hurts by: Jim Butcher

This was a cute, short, pretty easy and flowing story. I found it a tad bit shocking because of the two ‘star crossed lovers’ but Jim Butcher wrote it well. I love his writing, very humorous.

The Marrying Maid by: Jo Beverly

I did not like this story. It seemed to squish to many legends, myths, and just stuff into one tiny story and I did not like how adamant she was not to be with him and he was trying to force her and the whole “ok, why not” at the end. Annoyed me.

Rooftops by: Carrie Vaughn

This was interesting and uninteresting at the same time. I didn’t feel a connection to Charlotte at all but I liked the concept of a story about a masked avenger who is a normal man in a world full of superheros. Overall, ok, wish I could connect to the characters better.

Hurt Me by: M.L.N. Hanover

WOW! This story is creepy, twisted, and just awesome! I know it sounds weird but I don’t think I have ever read a story quite like this one. I love the darkness of the story and the way the author just takes it to a whole other level. Very good story!

Demon Lover by: Cecelia Holland

This was an interesting story. It was much like a fairy tale...well I think it was a fairy tale, a dark one. I enjoyed the intricacies of the story and would have loved to see a longer one. I think it would have made a great novel, romance perhaps. I enjoyed it.

More stories in this anthology are....

The Wayfarer’s Advice by: Melinda Snodgrass
Blue Boots by: Robin Hobb
The Thing About Cassandra by: Neil Gaiman
After the Blood by: Marjorie M. Liu
You, and You Alone by: Jacqueline Carey
His Wolf by: Lisa Tuttle
Courting Trouble by: Linnea Sinclair
The Demon Dancer by: Mary Jo Putney
Under/Above the Water by: Tanith Lee
Kaskia by: Peter S Beagle
Man in the Mirror by: Yasmine Galenorn
A Leaf on the Wind of All Hallows by: Diana Gabaldon

Bought this book specifically for the Diana Gabaldon story, which I thoroughly enjoyed and if it was just that story, I would have rated it much higher. However, people picking this up for the same reason may be disappointed. The Outlander series, and all of the "back stories", do not fit in one genre very easily. I enjoyed one or two of the other stories, skipped several, disliked some, and realized that if you remember the Sesame Street game "which of these is not like the others..." , that is how the Gabaldon story fit in this compilation. It didn't.

I really liked this anthology. Often when I read short story collections there are a lot of stories I don't like, but I believe there were only three stories here I disliked, out of a total of 17.

The book features a mix of fantasy, science fiction and horror stories, all with the central theme of love. While there is definitely a lot of romance, there are also a number of stories which do not have happy endings or which are darker in tone.

There are some big names featured in the book, including Robin Hobb, Jim Butcher, Neil Gaiman and others. A few authors have written stories which tie into their existing novel series, while other stories are standalones. I'm not sure if I have a favourite, although I enjoyed the story by Melinda M. Snodgrass enough to look up her other works, which appears to include a series inspired by the short story (at least, the novels all came out years after the anthology).

I read the entire book in one day and had a really good time, I recommend it.
