I love the DS 9 series, so I went into this already knowing what happened. It's good, though the author's interpretation of Dax is a little off, to me. Jadzia's more... playful?

it’s better as an episode then as a novelization. the extra tidbits of character information were nice but some scenes would never happen so early on in the relationships. the core message does read as well either. it didn’t hit me as hard as it did when i saw the show.

I was reading this around the same time I read the ST:TNG pilot novel. Nice thing about novelizations is that they provide additional insights on the characters. Over time, of the series, DS-9 became my favorite, especially later as the series progressed.

I enjoyed the episode a lot more than the novelization.

I'm reading the DS9 novelizations (mostly in time order) because I'm not ready to be done with the world of DS9 after finishing watching the show for the first time ever recently.
I found JM Dillard's writing engaging, and for a novelization of an episode, which can be harder to make engaging since the events have largely already been viewed on screen, that is high praise.

One thing I particularly enjoy about the earlier Star Trek books is the length. They seem to be shorter than the newer ones, or at least they read shorter. Technically, this one's nearly 300 pages, but the font is so large I got through it in less than two hours. There's not a lot of waffle here, is what I'm saying, and that makes this particular novelisation a good, fast-paced read. Pilot episodes always have a lot to do, of course, introducing all the different characters, and like the television episode, Emissary does it adequately, although the lion's share of attention goes to Sisko, which is fair enough. The rest of the characters get more basic sketches, but that's something that will round itself out in later novels, I expect.
Basically it's just a short, fun read. It reminded me of bits of the episode that I'd forgotten - it's been a while since I last rewatched the series - and it's making me want to go back and watch it again.
