The publisher kindly offered me a reader copy via NetGalley. Yet, this is an honest review of the book expressing my own opinion.

This book was so much fun! It's vibrant and full of life. The messages of self-awareness, self-acceptance, and self-love shone brightly. I would have liked it to be longer so it can include more information, but if their goal was to spread fun and self-acceptance, they nailed it. I honestly recommend it for any Black and Brown kids. Reading this was like taking a breath of fresh air and colors.

Also, I'd like to highlight that this book is written by kids for kids. Jfam, you are incredibly talented and already inspire other kids to love who they are.

My 9 year old loved the illustrations and rhymes. As a mixed race child, she is learning to love her hair, her appearance and her heritage. Beautiful book.

JFAM Johnson is the collective name of the 8 siblings who have written this book. They range in age from 4 to 13 years old. So I think I need to be a bit lenient in my rating here.

The entire book is shorter than its summary on Goodreads. It is written in poetic style, with a nod to hiphop and the hair textures of the usual artists involved in this style. The book is too specific in its content and target audience. I had assumed that it would go beyond the title; it doesn't.

On the plus side though, it will connect with its target audience to a great extent. I loved one of the lines from the book: "My hair defies gravity but I'm more than just my hair!"

I received an advance review copy of the book for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
