OOF. I loved this one as well. I somehow wish it was longer while simultaneously knowing it was exactly what it was meant to be.

as soon as she heard word that Albert, the Missus’s husband, had been slain in battle, she took up arms against the family who’d raised her, slipping a tincture of valerian root and skullcap into their cups of warmed milk before slitting their throats in the night.

with a similar tone to this section of the introduction paragraph to the story, is the entire thing told.

it’s dark and sometimes gruesome, mysterious in the way that it never explained what’s going on and how it happens it why in actual ways that make sense.

but at the same time does a story like this had to offer all the answers to its questions? or is it part of the story to be short enough to not need everything explain and just go along with it?

i am not exactly sure why i enjoyed this but i did.

it’s different and strange, brutal and bloody but also strangely hopeful in moments.

if you want a short horror story that’s different but interesting?
go for it.

Rivers Solomon has a way with the short story that I am simultaneously envious of and ravenous for. This story doesn't disappoint; revenge, gore, grappling with cycles of life and death, the concept of rebirth, found family, all hanging somewhere between horror and reality in a place where a girl like Sully is real and the traumatic things that happen to her are equally that and otherworldly.

If Rivers Solomon ever chose to expand on this story, its world, its characters, you would not find me disappointed.
